Clinical Ethics: Whose Right is it to Decide?
Dr. Joan Henriksen is coordinator of the Ethics Consultation Service at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She earned a Ph.D. in religious studies from the University of Iowa with a focus in virtue ethics and completed a fellowship in bioethics at Mayo. Dr. Henriksen enjoys providing ethics education to working clinicians as well as learners, and her current research interests include bias against clinicians by patients and families, interpreters’ experiences of requests to withhold truth from patients, and strategies to prevent ethical conflicts in intensive care. The bulk of her workday is filled with bedside consultation, where clinicians or patients ask for help with moral deliberation and ethical issues.
